MASTERS OF WINE AT FINCA LA EMPERATRIZ

If there is one academic rank that is universally recognised in the world of wine, it is that of  Master of Wine. For the last sixty years The Institute of Masters of Wine has been bestowing the title on those who pass a rigourous exam, which is not only written but also includes a demanding tasting test. The first exam was held in 1953 and in 1955, the Institute of Masters of Wine was formed …

ARE WINE CRITICS NECESSARY?

Who hasn’t heard of Robert Parker? In the world of wine, there is probably no-one who isn’t aware of this American lawyer, though they nothing of his work in the courtroom. A passionate wine-lover, he launched his seminal wine journal  The Wine Advocate in 1978 purely as a way of publishing his own opinions on the wines he was drinking. 40 years on, the points awarded by this small, leaflet he founded continue to be …

How do you know if a wine is from Rioja Alta?

Is there anything that defines a wine more than the place that it comes from? While the way the vineyard is grown, how and when the grapes are picked and then the wine is made and aged all have an influence on the final outcome, the starting point is crucial, giving almost genetic character and personality to the wine. Origin distinguishes and differentiates one wine from another, even one which has been grown quite close …

SINGLE VILLAGE RIOJA WINES, A UNIQUE TASTING

An unusual tasting of Rioja wines. For once, the wines were not tasted according to the known categories of  crianza, reserva and gran reserva, but instead, the 15 wines were organised according to the village where they were produced by the Association of Family Wineries in Rioja, of which Finca la Emperatriz is a member.   Master sommelier Juancho Asenjo took us on a journey, from north to south and east to west, back and …

PRUNING COMES TO AN END

A good sleep is healthy for us all and the same is true for a vineyard, which sleeps over the winter. When the plant has given all it’s got, when the intense work that this living being has been finally transformed into fruit in the form of grapes, it truly deserves a rest. As autumn arrives, the leaves fall, leaving branches and twigs bare and the sap withdraws into the heart of the plany.   …

VIÑEDOS HERMANOS HERNÁIZ, A NEW COMPANY NAME FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE

We have changed our official company name; when we bought the estate that had belonged to Eugenia de Montijo back in 1996, our first thought was to name the company after the name of the piece of land that the once Empress of France had owned in the village of Baños de Rioja, as we were going to be using the grapes to make wines from the estate – so the company was named Bodegas …

FIRST VINTAGE FOR NEW TANKS AT FINCA LA EMPERATRIZ

This year’s harvest has taken us into the first week of November. At last we have been able to harvest our Graciano grapes, as it is a very late-ripening variety and even the Tempranillo took until the end of October to ripen properly. During the long and unremittingly hot summer the Tempranillo vines actually stopped ripening as a measure of self-preservation and only began again in September when the temperatures had dropped and the process …
