Tim Atkin, one of the best-known journalists and commentators in the world of wine, came by to visit the winery on the 28th of September. This is one of the really serious visits, a person whose CV is truly impressive. He is not only a Master of Wine, he has won over thirty prizes for his wine journalism and photography, has written for all the top specialist magazines (Decanter, The World of Fine Wine, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Imbibe) as well as popular publications like Jamie Magazine and is also the co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge, one of the top wine competitions in the world.
So, it was one of those visits which really tests your mettle, though at the same time, it is exciting to have our wines tasted by a true authority to see how we and our wines really measure up to the competition.
To begin with, we were really lucky with the weather, a clear blue sky and mild temperatures so that when Tim arrived, we were able to wander through the vineyard and show him the differences between the different plots. The harvest was already underway and with the grape-pickers beavering away, it was a perfect moment to show our vineyard in the very best light.
Afterwards it was time to get down to the nitty-gritty and taste through the range of wines, not only those which are our current releases but also a couple of older vintages and some wines from barrels. Unfortunately we can’t yet write about the comments and ratings, as nothing has yet been published, but we think he took away a very positive impression. Tim said that he had to admit that he couldn’t explain how he hadn’t come across Finca la Emperatriz before, and assured us that he had been fascinated by the wines and was sure they would be successful. We hope he’s right!
